چکیده

The electronic processes responsible for charge transport and electroluminescence in multilayered organic light emitting diodes OLEDs are very sensitive to the properties of the organic heterojunction. In particular, the height of the energy barrier affects the way in which electrons and holes meet at the heterojunction, the way in which the barrier is crossed, and the probability for photon creation. We investigate these aspects experimentally using a family of OLED devices in which different hole transporting materials are used in otherwise identical device architectures to vary the interfacial hole barrier over a wide energy range. We find that the quantum efficiency of the device is maximum for low-energy barriers and drops for high barrier values where a redshifted electroluminescence spectrum is observed. This shift is attributed to exciplex generation at the heterojunction. The contributions of exciton and exciplex annihilation in radiative and nonradiative channels to the charge flow within the heterojunction region are separated and quantified. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. Thin-film Encapsulation of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Using Single and Multilayer Structures of MgF2, YF3 and ZnS

In this research, the lifetime of green organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is studied using four passivation layers. To encapsulate the OLEDs, MgF2, YF3, composed of alternating MgF2/ZnS and YF3/ZnS layers were grown by thermal vacuum deposition. Measurements show that the device lifetime is significantly improved by using YF3 and ZnS as passivation layers. However, diodes encapsulated by Mg...

High-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes with fluorescent emitters.

Fluorescence-based organic light-emitting diodes have continued to attract interest because of their long operational lifetimes, high colour purity of electroluminescence and potential to be manufactured at low cost in next-generation full-colour display and lighting applications. In fluorescent molecules, however, the exciton production efficiency is limited to 25% due to the deactivation of t...

Light-emitting silicon pn diodes

We report on the electrical and optical characteristics of silicon light-emitting pn diodes. The diodes are prepared by ion implantation of boron at high doses and subsequent hightemperature annealing. Under forward bias, the diodes emit infrared electroluminescence closely below the band gap of bulk Si. We present a rate-equation model for bound excitons, free excitons and free carriers which ...

Texturing the cathode of white organic light-emitting diodes with a lattice of nanoscale scatterers for enhanced light out-coupling

The external quantum efficiency of white organic light-emitting diodes is often limited by light out-coupling losses due to surface plasmons. We demonstrate how texturing of the metal-cathode surface using a two-dimensionally periodic lattice of nanoscale scatterers with limited disorder can be used to reduce plasmonic losses while simultaneously enhancing both the light out-coupling and the sp...
